The unstable situation in several Mediterranean countries, like Turkey and Egypt, has sparked a falling tourism rate. Meanwhile, in Spain, there were outstanding numbers of foreign visitors this summer. Last July, Spain broke its record with 9.6 million international tourists. In the first seven months of 2016, the number of tourists visiting Spain increased by 11.1% and reached 42.4 million.
One of every four tourists was a UK resident, 23% of the total, followed by France (13.8%) and Germany (3.5% annual rate). The last official figures presented by Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism indicated that the total expenditure by international tourists visiting Spain in June totaled 7.871 million euros, an increase of 12.7% compared with the same month last year. The average expenditure per tourist stood at 1038 euros, while spending reached 134 euros, 0.8% higher than in June 2015.
The average duration of tourists is 7.7 days. In total from January to June this year, the expenditure increased by 8.2% over the previous year, reaching 32.685 million euros.
As to the main destinations for tourists, Catalonia leads the ranking with 25.3% of the total, followed by the Balearic Islands (24.7%) and Andalucía (12.7%). Then we have Canary Islands (21%), Madrid (16.2%) and the Valencia region (13.4%).
The number of nights spent by foreign tourists in all types of housing exceeds 58.7 million in July. Furthermore, the number of individuals renting a vacation home increased by 8% for a total of 1,284,831 tenants. The duration of the majority stay in July with tourists was four to seven nights, with 4,301,605 tourists at a 21.2% annual growth.
The forecast for this year in Spain is that the number of tourists will rise 3% according to the World Travel and Tourism Council.
